An API key is like a password that connects AI Lekhani to an AI service like Gemini or Claude. You create it on the AI provider's website — it takes about 90 seconds for Gemini and is completely free. AI Lekhani needs it to send your writing instructions to the AI and receive the written text back. Your key is stored only in your browser and never sent to AI Lekhani's servers.
Your writing is stored entirely in your browser on your own device. AI Lekhani has no server that stores your manuscripts. The only time your text leaves your device is when it's sent to the AI provider (Gemini, Claude, or ChatGPT) to generate the next part of your story — the same way it would if you were using those services directly. You can export an encrypted backup of everything at any time.
Gemini (Google's AI) has a generous free tier — you can write a lot before spending anything. Claude costs approximately ₹2 per writing session. ChatGPT costs approximately ₹3 per session. A "session" is one back-and-forth exchange — so writing a full chapter might cost ₹5–15 depending on how many drafts you generate. AI Lekhani itself is free and takes nothing from these costs.
Yes. AI Lekhani is fully responsive and designed for mobile writing. On a phone, the chapter sidebar becomes a slide-in drawer, the Codex opens as a bottom sheet, and there is a bottom navigation bar for quick access to all features. The voice input feature works on Chrome for Android. Safari on iPhone has limited voice support due to Apple's browser restrictions, but all other features work perfectly.
Each book project has its own writing language setting. You can have one project in Hindi, another in Tamil, and another in English. You can also switch the language of a project at any time in Settings. The AI will write all prose in whichever language you've selected, with the appropriate style and cultural conventions for that language.
Your writing is stored in your browser's local storage. Clearing your browser will delete it — so export a backup regularly using the Backup button in the sidebar. Backups are encrypted with your own password and can be restored on any device or any browser. Cross-device sync (automatic) is coming in AI Lekhani Pro.
